Measuring and Fitting your Bra

It is adviseable to be professionally fitted for your new bra to ensure perfect fit and comfort at a time when you need it most. We all feel vulnerable after surgery and just want to feel normal again, by wearing a professionally fitted, specialist bra you can achieve this.

The Ju-Nique personal fitting service offers precisely that, however, if you are unable to get to Ju-Nique because of transport or health reasons, then the following is guide to measuring yourself. This will then give me an idea of what sizes might be suitable for you. Remember, initial measuring is only a guide, a well-fitting bra depends on many other things as well and a professional fitter is trained to do this for you.

Measuring

A good starting point to find the perfect bra for you is to determine your size by the traditional route of measuring.

• Your bra size is your under bust measurement +4" if an even number and +5" if an odd number. Measure in inches directly under your breast line, ensuring the tape is firm and level across your back
• Your cup size is found by measuring around the fullest part of your breasts, if you have had a mastectomy measure from the middle of your chest, over the fullest part of your remaining breast, keeping the tape level, to the centre of your spine. Double this measurement
• If this measurement is the same as your bra size measurement, then you are an A cup, 1" more a B cup, 2" more a C cup, 3" more a D cup, 4" more a DD cup and so on
• Remember, these measurements are only a guide as styles do vary, and your personal fitting will help you with this as your fitter has many styles to suit from and can use past experience to know which is the right one for you

A Well Fitting Bra will:

• Have shoulder straps correctly adjusted
• Breasts/breast form well contained in the cups
• Centre front of the bra sitting well between the breasts
• Bra firm around the body and fitting well down at the back
• Weight of the breasts supported through the back of the bra

(All of which your fitter can do for you and is able to see at a glance where problems might be)

The following are some of the reasons why your bra might not fit you properly:

• The back of the bra rides up - bra might be too big
• Flesh bulging above the neck or underam edges - bra might be too small
• Wrinkling in the cups - cup size may be too big or style not suitable for your breasts

(Is this you, does your current bra have any of the above? If so you need to be measured and fitted for a new bra as soon as possible)

All quite complicated, and research shows that the majority of women in this country are not wearing the correct size and fit of bra, thus leading to discomfort, poor shape. Recent TV programs such as Look Good Naked and the various Trinny and Susannah series have highlighted this.
